Please join us on Monday October 4 for a panel discussion on Critical Race Theory (CRT) in Education.
As we heard in August, much has been said in the media about CRT. Critics have suggested that CRT is the proverbial boogeyman that has desecrated schools throughout the country. In reality, very little is known about CRT, and there has been limited discussion about whether or how it could be used in P-12 school settings.
We will hear from a panel of leading scholars who will offer substantive ideas about the transformative potential of CRT in schools and communities:
- Dr. Marvin Lynn, professor and former dean at Portland State University, will offer a brief overview of CRT, bringing attention to its tenets.
- Dr. Tara J. Yosso is a professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Riverside. Dr. Yosso will talk about her concepts of “Community Cultural Wealth" and "Critical Race Curriculum”, and their transformative potential for schools.
- Dr. David Stovall, is a professor in the departments of Black Studies and Criminology, Law & Justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Stovall will share his work on how CRT could be used as a lens to foster transformative work in communities. He will also share how these ideas could be embedded with schools - articulating a
vision for a model of “education” vs. “schooling” within community contexts.
