RtR Community,

We have some exciting news! We've partnered with Clackamas County SURJ to facilitate our White Affinity work moving forward. Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) is a national organization that brings hundreds of thousands of white folks into fights for racial and economical justice. The partnership makes sense for us as the point of the RtR white affinity group is to take a more focused approach to affinity work, where white community members organize around supporting the priorities outlined by the BIPOC community. A great place to start is using the action items outlined in the Coalition of Communities of Color's Belonging in Clackamas County report (summarized below) as a great blueprint for us to follow and be accountable to.

Summarized Actions (from pages 155-166 of the report) to be uplifted and supported in Clackamas County:

BIPOC histories and future, which included things like making BIPOC histories more visible in schools, libraries, and other public spaces.
Peer-to-peer support systems, which included creating more support and networking opportunities for BIPOC business owners.
Diversifying workforce and leadership, which included improving resources for job seeking, materials in multiple languages, and audits of hiring and retention data.
Community events and resource sharing, which included creating spaces, institutional partnerships, and organizational and administrative support for community-building cultural events.
Supporting community-based organizations, which included creating additional funding strategies and streamlining funding processes to support community-based organizations providing culturally and linguistically-specific services.
Institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion: compliance, data, and harm reduction, which focused on making sure legal compliance is happening, data is accurately collected, tracked, and publicly shared, and harm reduction efforts are being implemented in the workplace.
And student desires for change, which focused on putting more emphasis on recruiting and retaining BIPOC teachers, training staff on equity and racism, and providing funds for culturally specific spaces, gatherings, and mental health resources.

BIPOC COMMUNITY MEMBERS - attend the next BIPOC Healing and Visioning Session facilitated by Tammie Zhao on Nov. 2 from 2-4pm at Lake Oswego United Church of Christ. This session will focus on healing techniques, community building and agenda setting for RtR. The space is limited to 20 people, so sign up quickly! Light refreshments will be provided!
