Students! Are you a graduating high school senior in the Lake Oswego School District worried about taking on financial debt from college and being burdened by existing in a recursive social hierarchy that fails you at every turn? Fear not, RtR can help. With the first part at least.

Mark your calendars! May 13 Community Meeting

Black Girl in Suburbia is a documentary by filmmaker Melissa Lowery that examines the experiences of Black girls who live in predominantly white communities, such as Lake Oswego. We will watch and discuss the film, as well as her work creating space for Black students in predominantly white schools in Portland and Beaverton.

Melissa Lowery is a wife and mother that lives in the Pacific Northwest.  She is an Equity and Liberation Strategist, and Director/Producer of the Documentary film, Black Girl In Suburbia. She always seeks to create better and equitable environments that honor the human dignity of each person through storytelling and dialogue. Melissa currently works at Central Catholic High School in Portland as the Director of Equity and Community Engagement.

Community ask: Seeking volunteers for upcoming event

Respond to Racism is needing 3-4 volunteers to work the booth at the upcoming LO Sustainability Resource Fair. The event will take place on Saturday April 20th, from 10:00-1:00pm, just in time for the LOHS AASU Asian Cultural Festival at 2:00pm. 

If you’re able, please consider volunteering since going forward Respond to Racism will be hosting more events and opportunities to get involved with our planning, outreach, and organizing!

April 20th: LOHS AASU Asian Cultural Festival 

From their website: We are excited to introduce the third annual Asian Cultural Festival in Lake Oswego! On April 20th, we will open the doors of Lake Oswego High School to the public, sharing our culture through performances, food samples, activities booths, local vendors, cultural exhibits, and much more!

The event will be held at Lake Oswego High School from 1:00-8:00pm, with food samples served at 2:00pm on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission to the event is free, and if you’d like to watch any of the performances, tickets are $5! To ensure access to the 2-hour performance by nine different cultural groups, purchase tickets at this link.
