The struggle for liberation never rests, and today we are calling on you to stand up against an attempt to mute our voices and deny our progress.
There's a movement brewing that threatens to wipe out the funding for the Clackamas County Equity and Inclusion Office. Emmett Wheatfall, former head of this crucial office, has already raised his voice against this destructive effort. This is not just an
attack on an office; it is an assault on our collective strength, resilience, and capacity to demand justice and equality.
Our community has been in flux, with our community members of biracial, Hispanic, Latino, Black, and Asian descent increasing from 15% to nearly 22% over the past decade. Furthermore, this office serves our kin living
with disabilities and those who proudly identify as LGBTQ+, making it a beacon of hope and justice for all historically marginalized voices.
This office is our shield against racial injustice. It operates a racial equity support line, provides translation and interpretation services, and facilitates hearing accommodations to those seeking access to county
services. It stands as an ally for our county employees, running an Employees of Color Resource Group.
Echoing the powerful words of Milwaukie City Councilor Desi Nicodemus, “By disbanding this department, the county would effectively silence those voices that have historically been [Historically] marginalized." This is not an outcome we can
accept.
We urge you, in the spirit of liberation and unity, to rise against this threat. Contact the Commissioners today. Remind them of our power, of our worth, and of the critical role the Equity and Inclusion Office plays in our
community.
